Recruiting Timers
I’m sure it’ll come as no surprise that a large number of FFF staff members have become more inactive or retired from fansubbing over the past year and a half or so, but we’ve become much more lacking in the timing department than any other. At this time, we have one active timer aside from myself. Although it’s been the area of the group that’s diminished the most, it’s affected us the least. This is only because I’ve been willing to personally time every show that none of our timers have wanted to so the rest of the group can pick up the shows they want. This season too, I’m timing both of our shows by default in time I’d rather spend working on the backlog of movies, OVAs, and BDs. Considering the number of other roles I have on our Spring shows and the fact that I won’t have as much free time soon, I thought it was time this changed.
Thus I decided to start an active recruitment drive. In particular, anyone interested in timing Sakura Quest or Saekano is strongly encouraged to apply. Please mention this in the final question on the form if you are.
I’d prefer applicants with prior timing experience in other groups. I won’t require it, but I don’t have time to teach people completely from scratch, and you will be tested upon applying. If you want to try teaching yourself to time, you’ll find unanimated’s timing guides useful. (The second guide is what you really need to know, but it has some assumed knowledge from the first.)
To apply, follow this link and complete the form.
Edit: We’ve managed to recruit a few people so I’m going to say we’re no longer actively recruiting timers. Of course, recruitment is still open to experienced subbers (it was never closed, in fact), and the link can be found in the FAQ as always. Thanks to everyone who applied.
I have a question, why do you guys keep doing the current shows if you want to finish your backlogs first? I’m not complaining but your works get stockpiled each season and it’s kind of sad to see that
Good question. If we don’t pick up any current shows, there will be very little conversation in the staff chat to keep things alive in general, and the active people will pick up new projects elsewhere anyway. Then the group will become even less productive and soon die.
I’ve answered this several times already on other posts. It makes no sense to prevent the active, idle staff from picking up new projects because other people in the group are stalling shows from previous seasons.
In fact, as convex said, it could even be counter productive, because the staff chat would quickly become dead.
I always feel bad when I see these posts. I have no skills as much as I would like to help.
Timing’s easy. You’re given all of the software you’d need, and it’s a simple matter of denoting the times that the subs should appear on the screen.
Even just getting the rough times down is good as the editor and QC can tweak it at the end.
Timing is easy to learn, but timing fast and well, however, is not.
I mean at the start no-one has skills, like anything it takes time and practice, there are a fair number of guides out there to all the various parts of subbing from many different members of the cartel.
most of it does not take too much time to setup and try to see if it’s for you or not…
I know TL & timing and do it now and then. But I’m too busy with my studies to do it on a regular basis.
Anyway good finding good some good timers so that you guys can start giving us more treats.
Hey FFF, what IRC client do you recommend to use?
Hexchat.
Timing accurately is not my forte… I mean, I can do it, but a full episode takes me several hours, and given my amount of free time per day, that translates to 3-4 days. I do hope you guys find the help you need though.
Can’t you just ask other groups for help?
